Manchester United have stepped up their search for a new midfielder after missing out on Mateus Fernandes, who is expected to complete an £85m move to Tottenham Hotspur.

United had identified Fernandes as one of their priority targets this summer, but Spurs are understood to have won the race after agreeing to pay the asking price in full. The Red Devils, by contrast, preferred a deal that included performance-related add-ons.

Despite already agreeing a deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson earlier in the transfer window, United remain keen to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new season.

According to reports from The Athletic, Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha has emerged as one of the leading names on United’s shortlist, with discussions already underway over a potential move.

The player is believed to be open to the prospect of playing in the Premier League, giving United encouragement as they continue to assess their options in the market.

Nmecha’s reputation has continued to grow following an impressive World Cup campaign with Germany, despite their quarter-final exit to Paraguay on penalties.

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has previously described Nmecha as “one of the best midfielders in the world”—a glowing endorsement that underlines why the Borussia Dortmund midfielder is attracting interest from Old Trafford.

While Nmecha is among several players being considered, Manchester United are expected to continue evaluating their options before deciding who will become their next priority midfield signing this summer.
