Manchester City have reportedly identified Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal as a potential long-term replacement for Rodri should the Spain international eventually leave the Etihad Stadium.
Rodri’s future has been the subject of speculation, with the midfielder reportedly attracting interest from Real Madrid. The 30-year-old is said to be open to a return to Spain, potentially leaving City with a major decision to make in midfield.
Should Rodri depart, City could look to bring in a new central midfielder capable of controlling possession and dictating the tempo of matches. Bernal has emerged as one player who could fit that profile.
The Barcelona youngster has impressed since breaking into the first team, with his ability to operate as a No 6 and his composure in possession attracting attention.
Following Barcelona’s 3-0 victory over Levante last season, manager Hansi Flick praised Bernal’s performance, saying:
“Bernal played as number 6 and also gave us good ball control. He is excellent, always finding the right spot. He is also very intelligent, and that’s all the better. It’s fantastic that he is at this level.”

Manchester City are now reportedly monitoring the teenager and have entered the race for his signature, according to Caught Offside.
However, any potential deal could prove extremely difficult to complete. Manchester United have previously shown an interest in Bernal, but the midfielder was reportedly not keen on a move to Old Trafford.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are understood to have no desire to sell the highly-rated academy graduate. Bernal is also protected by a €500m (£427m) release clause in his contract, giving the Catalan club significant protection over his future.
Rodri’s Real Madrid links
While Bernal has emerged as a potential option, City’s priority could still be to keep Rodri at the Etihad Stadium.
Fabrizio Romano has previously suggested that the midfielder dreams of playing for Real Madrid, although a move this summer appears unlikely after Madrid president Florentino Perez reportedly blocked a deal for the World Cup winner.
City have already offered Rodri a new contract, with the proposal reportedly still on the table. His current deal is due to expire next summer, meaning the club will be keen to resolve his future.
If Rodri ultimately decides against extending his stay, City could turn their attention elsewhere, with Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi also reportedly on their radar. Direct talks are said to have opened over a potential deal for the highly-rated youngster.
For now, Manchester City’s focus will be on keeping Rodri, but the club appear to be preparing for every eventuality as they consider their options for the future of their midfield.
