Manchester United have renewed their interest in Inter Milan defender Carlos Augusto, with reports suggesting the club have already made a formal enquiry over a potential summer move.
The Red Devils are understood to be keen to strengthen their defensive options and have identified the 27-year-old Brazilian as a player capable of adding both quality and versatility to Ruben Amorim’s squad. United had explored a move for Augusto earlier this year and have now reignited their pursuit.
According to reports from Spain, Inter Milan could be willing to consider offers in the region of £25 million. While United are believed to be in a strong financial position to meet that valuation, they are not alone in the race, with Juventus and Roma also monitoring the defender’s situation.
Augusto is valued for his ability to operate in a variety of defensive roles, including as a left-back and wing-back. His versatility would provide added competition and cover for Luke Shaw, while also giving United greater tactical flexibility throughout the campaign.
After securing UEFA Champions League football for next season, Manchester United are expected to strengthen their squad depth to cope with the demands of competing on multiple fronts. However, Augusto is not the only defender on United’s shortlist. West Ham United youngster Oliver Scarles is also being monitored, with the highly-rated 20-year-old considered a possible alternative should a deal for the Inter defender fail to materialise.
