That inevitably raises questions about Chelsea’s ability to attract the very best players in the market.
The club have invested heavily in recent transfer windows, but they still appear vulnerable when competing for elite targets. Missing out on a player is part of football, but failing to convince a top target to even seriously consider the project is a different issue.
