Liverpool are reportedly preparing to make a major investment in a new winger this summer, with a deal potentially costing more than £100m.

The Reds are looking to strengthen their options in wide areas following a campaign in which they lacked pace and attacking threat on the flanks. The departure of Mohamed Salah has only increased the urgency to recruit a high-level replacement.

Salah’s final season at Liverpool may not have been his most productive, but he still contributed six goals and six assists — figures that underline the challenge facing the club as they look to replace his influence.

Liverpool are therefore expected to target a player at the top end of the market. Yan Diomande had reportedly been identified as a leading option, but the Ivorian is understood to favour a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

That has prompted Liverpool to consider alternatives, with Bradley Barcola now emerging as a potential target.

The Reds were reportedly monitoring Barcola as a possible “market opportunity” earlier in the year, with his contract situation attracting attention.

Barcola’s stock has since risen, with his performances at the World Cup reportedly increasing interest in the French winger. Liverpool are now facing competition for his signature but are believed to be ready to make their move if PSG decide to listen to offers.

Fabrizio Romano claims Liverpool remain the club showing the most concrete interest in Barcola, although any potential deal will depend on PSG’s valuation of the player.

Romano said: “Understand Liverpool remain the club showing most concrete interest in Bradley Barcola. No truth in [Barcola] links, LFC deal depends on conditions for the exit as price will be set by PSG. No talks over new contract so far.

“Liverpool’s interest could develop into a major transfer saga, with the club expected to continue monitoring the situation before deciding whether to pursue Barcola or turn their attention to another target.

However, should PSG agree to sell, Liverpool could face a significant financial outlay, with the eventual transfer fee potentially exceeding £100m.

PSG are unlikely to sanction Barcola’s departure for a low fee, meaning Liverpool may have to make a substantial investment if they are to bring the winger to Anfield
